Read the opening: Rocky and the Ninth-Inning Rule

Adventures with Rocky, Number 8, Rocky and the 9th Inning Rule, Chapter 1, The Dog on the Roster. Rocky joined the Harbor Hawks on a Tuesday, which was inconvenient because the team had already used up its good decisions for the week. On Monday, somebody had washed the white uniforms with a red towel. On Tuesday morning, Hunter had told Coach Diaz he could play shortstop, pitch, and organize the team fundraiser.

By Tuesday afternoon, the uniforms were pink, Hunter was lying about knowing how to run a fundraiser, and the Golden Retriever Lab mix was sitting in the dugout wearing a cap marked, assistant to nobody. Your title seems unclear, coach said. I value flexibility. Hunter had found him under the ball field, the spring he turned 6, a golden dog, holding an old baseball as if he'd been waiting for a game.

Rocky had come home and stayed. The dog belonged on the roster because of the new community league's mascot rule. Every team could nominate an animal mascot for the season festival. Rocky, who had two black tongues and his strong opinions about snack schedules, had been nominated unanimously by everyone except Hunter.

Hunter had been absent for the vote. I would have voted yes. He told the team. You said he sheds on your glove.

Priya said. Both things can be true. Priya played catcher. She had a fast throw, an untidy breed, and an ability to ask questions Hunter had hoped and asked.

Nobody would ask. What's the fundraiser plan? A big plan. Specific.

I'm developing the specifics. They needed $100 for the end of season transportation and field fees. A local sponsor had dropped out. Coach said nobody would be left behind because their family couldn't contribute.

But the money had to come from somewhere. Hunter had raised his hand before the silence could become embarrassing. That was how trouble began. He was 13.

He was the hock's strongest hitter and his hitter because the team had voted for him. He liked the way Captain looked next to his name. He liked it less when somebody needed a plan. Rocky leaned against the dugout gate.

Have you considered selling confidence? You appear to have a surplus. Hunter threw him a look. Rocky inspected the pink uniforms.

Talk about it
