Read the opening: Adventures with Rocky: Rocky 01 The Marsh Wakes Up
Hi friends, it's Dr. Nancy! I'm so glad you're here for Story Time with Rocky. Today's story is from Adventures with Rocky, book 1: Rocky, Jacob, and the Lost Duck Trail.
Last time we stopped in the middle of the story, so let's pick up right where we left off. Get comfy, and let's read together. Then a duck landed on the water. Jacob held his breath.
Another landed beside it. A third came in with such a splash that Rocky shut his eyes. “They have not practiced parking,” He whispered.
Dad smiled. Jacob matched the ducks to the card. “One green head. Two brown.”
“Good watching.” Beyond the water, reeds shook like long fingers. Jacob forgot that his toes were cold. He forgot the biscuit in his boot.
He watched the marsh become a whole living world. Chapter 3. The Orange Ribbon. The wind changed after breakfast.
A dark cloud stretched over the marsh. Dad looked up. “We're heading back.” “But we just got here.”
“The ducks can have the rest of the morning.” Rocky stood and shook. A cloud of golden fur drifted in the blind. “One of us has become a pillow,”
Jacob said. They packed up. Dad checked the path before they left. At the fork, he stopped beside a fallen branch.

“Wait right here while I move this out of the walkway.” Jacob stood on a dry patch. Rocky sat beside him. Then Jacob saw an orange ribbon between two trees.
The next marker. He took a few steps toward it. Rocky followed. A gust moved the bushes.
The orange ribbon vanished. Jacob stepped around them to find it again. There it was. Only it was not a ribbon.
It was a piece of orange cloth caught on a thorn. Jacob turned. The fork was gone. He saw trees.
Ferns. A fallen log. “Dad?” The wind pushed through the leaves.
“Dad!” Rocky's ears lifted. He looked one way, then another. Jacob's feet wanted to run.
His chest felt too small. He reached for Rocky's collar. Rocky stood still. “We have taken a wrong turn,”
The dog said. Jacob nodded. Somewhere beyond the trees, a branch cracked. Jacob squeezed the whistle.
Chapter 4. Three Small Sounds. The first whistle blast was tiny. It sounded like a mouse with a cold.
