FREE WRITING ASSESSMENT • AGES 4–15

Writing Help for Kids, Ages 4 to 15

Blank-page meltdowns, run-on sentences, or essays that never get started? At every age the program works the same way: a free writing assessment, one course picked for your child, and short lessons at home.

How the Writing Program Works (At Any Age)

Whatever your child’s age, the steps are the same. Only the lessons change.

1

Take the free writing assessment

Enter your email, pick your child’s grade, and answer a few quick questions. It takes about 3 minutes.

2

We pick the right course

The results show your child’s writing strengths, what to work on, and the one course that fits. No menu, no guessing.

3

Short lessons at home

Short writing lessons that build one skill at a time, from sentences to paragraphs to essays.

4

Support from Dr. Nancy

Every plan includes the Skool Parent Community: Dr. Nancy’s private parent group with weekly live sessions, all recorded.

Built by Dr. Nancy Barker, Ed.D.

Dr. Nancy has spent almost 50 years in education. Read Like Rocky turns that experience into a simple plan for parents: find out where your child really is in writing, then work on the right skills in the right order, a little at a time. And you’re not on your own: the Skool Parent Community gives you weekly live sessions with Dr. Nancy, recorded so you can watch any time.

Writing Help by Age

Here’s what children usually work on at each age. The assessment shows exactly where your child is.

Writing Help for Ages 4–6 (Pre-K to 1st Grade)

Early writing starts with hands and ideas: forming letters and telling a story.

What kids this age work on

  • Holding a pencil and forming letters
  • Writing their name and simple words
  • Spelling words by their sounds
  • Telling a story out loud, then drawing and writing a few words

The writing assessment starts at kindergarten. For a 4-year-old who isn’t in school yet, choose Kindergarten.

Writing Help for Ages 7–9 (2nd to 4th Grade)

Kids learn to write complete sentences and their first real paragraphs.

What kids this age work on

  • Complete sentences with capitals and punctuation
  • Common spelling patterns
  • A paragraph with a topic sentence and details
  • Short stories with a beginning, middle and end

Common signs parents notice: great ideas out loud but only a sentence on paper, or one long sentence with no stops.

Writing Help for Ages 10–12 (5th to 7th Grade)

Assignments get longer, and kids need to organize ideas across several paragraphs.

What kids this age work on

  • Planning and organizing ideas before writing
  • Opinion, informative and story writing
  • Stronger word choice and varied sentences
  • Revising and editing their own work

If your child stalls at the start, the problem is often planning, not effort. The assessment checks both ideas and mechanics.

Writing Help for Teens Ages 13–15 (8th to 10th Grade)

Teens write essays that need a clear point, evidence and clean grammar.

What kids this age work on

  • Essays with a clear thesis
  • Using evidence and explaining it
  • Research basics and citing sources
  • Argument writing, grammar and polish

Right now the free writing assessment covers grades K–8. For a 9th or 10th grader, choose 8th grade to check the foundations high-school essays depend on.

Writing Help for Teens 16 and Older

Our writing courses run through 12th grade. Since the free assessment checks K–8 skills today, older teens should start at 8th grade to confirm their foundations. Questions? Contact us.

Writing Program FAQ

Is the writing assessment really free?

Yes. Enter your email, answer the questions (about 3 minutes), and you’ll see your child’s writing results right away. We also email you a private link.

Do I have to choose a writing course?

No. The assessment picks the one course that fits your child’s results.

My child hates writing. Will this work?

Lessons are short and start at the skill your child is ready for, so writing feels doable instead of overwhelming.

What is the Skool Parent Community?

It’s Dr. Nancy’s private online group for parents (Skool is the name of the platform, not a school). It includes weekly live sessions with Dr. Nancy, and every session is recorded so you can watch later. It’s included with your plan.

How much does it cost?

Plans start at $89/month for one course or $129/month for two courses. You can also buy a single course one time for $597. Every plan has a 7-day money-back guarantee. Your child’s results page shows the options after the assessment.

Who is Dr. Nancy Barker?

Dr. Nancy Barker, Ed.D., has spent almost 50 years in education. She created Read Like Rocky to give parents a clear, simple plan for helping their child at home.
