Read the opening: Rocky and Hunter: The Last-Inning Club
Adventures with Rocky, number five, Rocky and Hunter, the last inning club. Chapter one, the player with four feet. Hunter knew three things about baseball. First, the ball was much harder than it looked, especially when it was coming straight at your face.
Second, people who shouted, easy catch, from the bleachers, had usually never been seen catching that particular ball on that particular afternoon, with the sun in their eyes and the whole team watching. Third, Rocky could slide into second base, moving his feet at all. The third fact had just become a problem. Rocky came skidding across the dusty practice field on his side, legs sticking straight out like a table that had fallen over, a stolen towel screaming behind him like a cape.
He was half golden retriever and half lab, his tongue hanging out far enough to show the two black spots on it, and he looked extremely pleased with himself. He came to rest against the bag in a small cloud of dirt. Coach Rivera lowered her clipboard very slowly. Why are you wearing my towel?
Wind resistance. Rocky said it as if this were obvious to anyone with an education. Why are you covered in chalk from the baseline? Team colors.

Rocky admired the white streaks along his golden side. And why, coach asked, in the patient voice she usually saved for parents who wanted to discuss the batting order, are you on second base? Rocky considered the question with great seriousness. The way a businessman might consider a difficult offer.
Career development. Hunter laughed out loud. He was the only one laughing because the rest of the Oak Street Owls were waiting to find out whether Coach thought this was funny before they committed to anything. Coach Rivera pointed toward the shaded bench beyond the playing area where a rubber mat and a water bowl were waiting.
Your career is team mascot. Your office is over there, on the mat. No dogs on the live field during play. Rocky rose with dignity as possible for somebody wearing a towel as a cape.
Management is threatened by my talent. He trotted off. Hunter had found the bleachers at this very ball field. He turned six.
Rocky had been lying in the shade, holding an old baseball in his mouth.
